What can we visit in Gijon?
Elogio del Horizonte: This mammoth sculpture is found on the top of Santa Catalina Hill and is one of Gijón’s most famous sights. The most fascinating is that if you put yourself in the center of the sculpture, you can listen the waves of the sea.
The Beaches: Among the many beaches of the region, “San Lorenzo” is one of the most famous in this city. You can walk of San Lorenzo, and find kites, surf boards, skates, bikes, football, footing, sand castles, sports champions, beach chairs, sunshades and many people.
Aquarium: A great option for tourists, especially families. It covers 4,000 square metres and is home to a lot of marine creatures from different species. There’s everything here from seastars and piranhas to sharks. The Aquarium is located on the promenade of Poniente Beach. Admission cost 15€.
Museo del Ferrocarril: The Railway Museum of Asturias is responsible for conserving Asturias historical railway heritage. It displays exhibits on the Industrial Revolution, technological development and the social impact of railways in the region. It is housed inside an old railway station and features lots of old steam engines.
Museo del Pueblo de Asturias: East of the city centre you’ll find this museum of Asturian culture. Look out for the traditional Asturian bagpipes, the elegant carriages, prints, lithographs, photographs and documents, showing what life used to be like here in the old days.
Termas Romanas: To the west of San Lorenzo Beach, and close to Santa Catalina Hill, sit the ancient Roman Baths, built around 100 AD. Look out for the cold zones, warm bath areas, and the hot spaces used as saunas.
The Parks: Gijon has ample green spaces full of life, which are necessary to visit. About the most famous park are “Isabel La Católica”, “La Providencia”, “El Rinconín”, “El Cerro de Santa Catalina” and “Los pericones”.
Campa Torres: In this museum you can find information about the asturian prehistory and explain the origins of the city. A walk from pre-Roman to Roman times. Then, you can visit the lighthouse too.
